BARRE - William R. Dudley, 85, a long-time resident of Trow Hill, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at the Veterans Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina with his family by his side.
Born on April 5, 1933, William was the son of the Brandon and Edna (Belville) Dudley. He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1951 and then served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. While stationed at the Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, he attended the College of William and Mary. Following his discharge from the Navy, William returned to Barre and began his 42-year career as an insurance broker.
On October 29, 1960, William married Irene Longchamp in St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church in Graniteville. They made their home in Graniteville until 1971, when they moved to Trow Hill until their retirement to Carrboro, North Carolina in 1998.
He held memberships in the American Legion Post 10, the Canadian Club, the Lions Club, and the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America. He also held life memberships with the VFW Post 792, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and was a sixty-year life member of the Barre Elks Lodge 1535.
Throughout his life, William enjoyed gardening, boating, fishing, golf, photography, playing the trumpet and french horn, and collecting watches and clocks. During his retirement, Bill enjoyed helping others with their hunting and fishing needs while working part-time for 15 years in the sporting goods department of Wal-Mart. He loved spending time with family, while always missing his friends and family in Vermont.
He is survived by his wife, Irene, of Carrboro, NC; his children, daughter Susan and her husband, James Frink of Ashaway, RI; son William Dudley and his wife, Lynn of St. Augustine, FL; daughter Nancy and her husband, Alan Douse of Bolton, VT; and daughter Stephanie and her husband, Roy Goulet of Durham, NC; his siblings, sisters Marilyn Ford and Donna Scalabrini of Barre, brothers Gerald Dudley and Steven Dudley of Barre, John Dudley of Morrisville, and Timothy Dudley of Ankeny, IA; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Sylvester Cemetery in Lower Websterville. Following the service there will be a reception. There are no calling hours.
