BARRE – Wendell N. Gauthier, Sr., 83, of Beech Street passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.
Born December 13, 1935 in Montpelier, he was the son of Lucien and Dorothy (Bissel) Gauthier. He attended elementary schools in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in the Mediterranean until he was honorably discharged four years later.
In 1958, he married Shirley Lafley in Chelsea. Following their marriage, they made their home in East Barre before settling in Barre. Shirley passed away in 2015.
Wendell was a self-employed jack of all trades working at many job sites over the years. In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering with small engines and time spent with family and friends.
His memberships included the American Legion Post #10 of Barre and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #790 also of Barre.
Survivors include his sons Wendell Gauthier, Jr., of Barre and Scott Gauthier of Manchester, NH; his brothers Donald Gauthier of Montpelier, VT and William Gauthier of Victory, MT as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Shirley; his sister Phyllis and his brother Jim.
The graveside service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center at the convenience of his family.
The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre assisted the Gauthier family with the arrangements.
