BARRE - It is with great sadness that we announce that Todd Martel, 60, passed away early Saturday morning February 24, 2024, after a long battle with cancer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He was diagnosed with myelofibrosis in 2004 and boldly carried on his fight until he succumbed to complications from his second bone marrow transplant late last week.
Born on April 21, 1963, in Barre City, he was the son of Howard “Sonny” and Carole (Bylow) Martel. Todd grew up in Barre Town attending area schools until reaching Spaulding High School, graduating in 1981. A star athlete, Todd’s perennial performances in hockey and football frequently jumped from the playing field into the pages of local newspapers.
Others’ memories of his athletic prowess could overshadow his intellectual curiosity. Todd obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Trinity College in May 1992. And for much of his adult life, his days were rarely spent without a book in his hand.
Todd dedicated nearly 28 years to Frito Lay as a salesperson. He was steadfast and methodical in his work, often going in during his time off to get ahead with his tasks. The only thing he enjoyed more than his work were his opportunities to travel. Florida was his favorite destination for vacationing in the summer sun.
He was a person of great calm. Todd carried a stoic demeanor, without complaint, nor needing to say a bad word about anyone. What brought him his deepest pride was being a parent to his two children Antony and Emily, encouraging and nurturing their passions for academics and business. He was a father with endless jokes, riddles, and findings to share on politics and news stories. His acerbic wit and dry humor were deeply cherished by those closest to him.
Survivors include his children Antony and Emily Martel; his parents Howard “Sonny” and Carole Martel; and his siblings Brian Martel and his wife, Chrissy; Cathy Royce and her husband, Scott; and Steven Martel as well as his nieces and nephews Jessica Martel, Jennifer Martel, Cameron Royce, Taylor Royce and Lexie Royce.
He was predeceased by his brother Scott who passed away in 1992.
The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the Barre Congregational Church, 35 Church Street, Barre. There are no calling hours.
