SOUTH BARRE – Sheldon James Nadeau, “Shelly”, 89, of South Barre Road passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at the Heaton Woods Nursing Home in Montpelier.

Born March 11, 1930 in Graniteville, he was the son of Alec and Winnifred (McLaughlin) Nadeau. Shelly attended local elementary schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1948. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Coral Sea in the Mediterranean for four years.

On November 10, 1959 he married Irene J. Farnham. Following their marriage, they made their home in South Barre.

Shelly was a truck driver for 40 years and most of that time was spent driving for Couillard’s Heating Oil. He was a 65-year member of the American Legion Post #10 in Barre. In his spare time, Shelly loved time spent in his garden, hunting – walking in the woods, fishing, although most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Nadeau of Heaton Woods in Montpelier; his son John Nadeau and his wife, Pam of Barre; and his daughter Audrey Kerin and her husband, Patrick of Averill; his grandchildren Zachary Kerin and Alec and Austin Nadeau; and his great-grandchildren Caden and Maeve Kerin and Miles Nadeau – he was very proud to have had great-grandchildren; his brother A. Douglas Nadeau of Graniteville; his sisters-in-law Charlene Nadeau of Graniteville; Carol Nadeau of Montpelier; and Emma Gingras of Washington; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Willis and Edsel and his sisters Frieda Garand and Evelyn Vivian.

The graveside service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Wilson Cemetery in Lower Websterville. There are no calling hours. The family would like people to join them for a light luncheon following the service at the American Legion Post #10 on Main Street in Barre.

Shelly’s family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Heaton Woods and also at Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice for the compassionate loving care that he received.
