BARRE – Ruth W. Rand, 89, of Sunset Road passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024, at the Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Berlin surrounded by her family.

Born on May 13, 1934, in West Lebanon, NH, she was the daughter of Orris and Esther (Bond) Wheeler. She attended East Montpelier Village School and graduated from Spaulding High School.

On August 15, 1953, she married the love of her life Clement Rand. They built a house together in Barre Town, spending many nights and weekends getting a special home together for their three children.

Ruth spent her working life in various aspects of the banking industry in Barre as an Administrative Secretary at Peoples Bank, First Vermont Bank, Bank of Vermont and Vermont National Bank.

In her spare time, she enjoyed seasonal camping at Lake Champagne and later at Abel Mountain Campground, enjoying the company of special friends sitting around the campfire, sharing meals and stories and playing cards. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her children and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also part of a “knitting club,” the Knit-Wits, with lifelong friends. She was a member of the Eastern Star Charity Chapter.

Survivors include her daughter Catherine Smith and her husband, Craig of Barre and her son Kevin Rand of Calais, her 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, her sisters Mary Garcia and her husband, Manuel and Doris Phillips as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Clement Rand, her son Keith Rand, and her sister Patricia Culver.

The service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at the convenience of her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Woodridge Nursing Home Activities Fund, Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Home, PO Box 550, Barre, VT  05641.
