WILLIAMSTOWN - Ruth (Sample) Beaton, age 91, died peacefully early Thursday, September 10, 2015 at her home with her family.
Born May 19, 1924 in Johnson, Vermont to Everest and Harriett (Emery) Sample, she was the fourth child of ten. Ruth graduated from Williamstown High School in the class of 1941.
On November 9, 1945 she married Glendon D Beaton, who predeceased her in 2004.
From 1942 to 1945 she attended nurses training at Barre City Hospital and interned at Boston City Hospital. Upon earning her registered nurses (RN) degree, she returned to VT to work at Barre City Hospital from 1945-1962. After leaving Barre City Hospital she went on to be the RN at Sprague Electric also in Barre. Her next endeavor was a visiting nurse at Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice (CVHHH) beginning in 1969. While working at CVHHH, she was the school nurse at the Washington and Orange Village Schools. Ruth’s greatest accomplishment was being one of the four founders of the Hospice program in Central Vermont. She retired from CVHHH in 1983 and relocated with Glen to Melbourne, Florida. During her early retirement she worked McFarland House in Barre during the summer. In 2005 she moved back to Vermont where she resided at The Garden’s in Williamstown, VT.
During her time at the Garden’s she volunteered at the CVHHH foot clinic. In 2013 she was the CVHHH volunteer of the year. Ruth’s creative abilities were endless; she could look at anything and go home and replicate it! For years Ruth made Halloween costumes; which were worn by her grandchildren, great grandchildren and their friends. In 1996 she attended The Braemar Summer School of Kilt Making in Troy, New York. She then made kilts for several of her family members.
In 2014 while Ruth was recovering from chemo at Woodridge Health and Rehab, she learned how to make memory bracelets. She has made approximately 1,000 bracelets! Of late she donated all of the proceeds to the Lamoille Area Cancer Network. At their annual walk in June she presented them with over $4,000. Her family will continue this tradition in her memory. Ruth’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the joy of her life and she loved them all dearly.
Survivors include her daughters, Cheryl Currier and her husband, David, and Donna Scott and her husband, Kevin; grandchildren, Cortney Currier-Holloway and her husband, Spencer; Stephanie Currier and her husband, Frank Carbonneau; Jennifer Mason and her husband, Joshua; Karrin Scott and Hillarie Ruth Scott; great grandchildren Riley Carbonneau and her fiancé, John Phillips, Isaiah Carbonneau and Miles Mason; her siblings Harriett Leclair, Richard Sample, Kay Erff, George Sample and her 107 year old Aunt Mable Ericcson and many nieces and nephews. She also had many friends at The Gardens who she considered her extended family.
She is predeceased by her spouse, her parents and siblings Madeline Joyal, Shirley Bernier, Douglas Sample, William Sample and James Sample.
Ruth’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 11am in the Graniteville Presbyterian Church. There will be no calling hours.
