BERLIN - Rosina “Pinney” Chapin Cheney died May 24 th , 2018 in central Vermont, where she had lived since 2005.
Born in Providence to Margaret and Walcott Chapin on August 29, 1933, she spent her childhood in Barrington, RI before attending boarding school at St. Mary’s in the Mountains in Littleton, NH. She studied political science and French at Middlebury College where she also met her husband of 40 years, Marvin Cheney.
After living for several years in Los Angeles they settled in Glastonbury, CT, where they raised two daughters, Loring and Galen.
Pinney had a long and successful career with Lord and Taylor in West Hartford. Among her many lifelong passions were politics, opera, travel, modern art, good friends, britcoms, the Sunday Times and dogs. A woman of keen intellect and discerning taste, she was also a committed supporter of the arts and artists. She was funny, big-hearted, and will be greatly missed by the many people who loved her.
She is survived by two daughters, Loring Cheney of New Ipswich, NH, and Galen Cheney of North Adams, Mass, their husbands, Robert Allen and John Haynes, step-grandchildren Luke Allen and Phoenix Haynes, and her sister, Phoebe Chapin, of Barre, Vt.
A graveside service to celebrate and honor her life will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Williamstown Village Cemetery, Route 14, Williamstown, VT.
