RANDOLPH – Roland “Roy” Maxfield, 92, a former long-time Barre resident passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at the Gifford Hospital Garden Room with his family at his bedside.
Born April 14, 1927 in Barre, he was the son of Harry and Leah (Thompson) Maxfield. Roy attended elementary school in Plainfield and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1945. After his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Petty Officer, 2 nd Class in the Pacific Theatre until he was honorably discharged in 1946.
On July 26, 1947 he married Emily Batchelder in Plainfield. Following their marriage, they made their home in Plainfield before moving to Barre, where they lived for many years. Upon retirement, they moved to Mesa, Arizona and Ocala, Florida where they wintered, and they spent their summers at the Apple Island Resort in South Hero. Emily passed away in August of 2011.
Roy was in the appliance repair business for Ormsby’s TV and Appliance, was an electrician, a plumber and was a wastewater technician. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Plainfield and the Masons Wyoming Lodge for over 70 years. In his spare time, Roy enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing horseshoes.
Survivors include his son Brent Maxfield and his wife, Penny of East Roxbury; three grandchildren Sirena Maxfield and her partner, Josh Meehan, David Cody Maxfield and his partner, Hannah Metivier, and Ryan Maxfield; one great-granddaughter, Finley Layne Maxfield and a special little friend Addison; his sister, Joyce (Clayton) Copping of Barre as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Emily Maxfield; his son, Alan Maxfield and his brothers Harry, Jr., George, Terry and Dennis.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Plain-Mont Cemetery in East Montpelier. There are no calling hours.
