MONTPELIER – Richard M. Woodruff, 70, of Heaton Woods, passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

Born September 20, 1948 in Burlington, he was the son of Dr. Frank E. and Evelyn (MacDonald) Woodruff.

Dick attended St. Monica Elementary School in Barre and the Green Mountain School in Montpelier and later received his GED. He joined the U.S. Navy following his schooling in 1968 and was honorably discharged in 1970.

He made his home in the Barre and Montpelier areas and was employed as a food service worker at Central Vermont Medical Center, Heaton Woods, and McFarland House as well as other jobs in the Central Vermont area.

Dick was affiliated with St. Monica Catholic Church and was a member of the American Legion Post #10 of Barre and #3 of Montpelier.

Survivors include his brothers Stephen Woodruff, M.D. and his wife, Micki of Barre; Frank Woodruff, Jr., and his wife, Jackie of San Antonio, TX; David Woodruff and his wife, Dianne of Manchester, NH; and Paul Woodruff of Colchester; his sisters Mary Woodruff of Williston; Sarah Ford of Concord, NH; and Jane Woodruff and her companion Arlene Averill of Greensboro; several nieces and nephews; as well as his “special family” at Heaton Woods.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Anne M. Woodruff; his sister-in-law Elizabeth Leopold and his cousin Rev. Richard Vickery.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church, 79 Summer Street, Barre.   Family and friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Following the service, entombment will be made in the Hooker and Whitcomb Vault. Interment will take place in the Lincoln-Noyes Cemetery in Greensboro in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heaton Woods Activity Fund, Heaton Woods, 10 Heaton Street, Montpelier, VT 05602 or to the Vermont Food Bank, 33 Parker Road, Barre, VT 05641.

The Woodruff family would like to express its gratitude to the staff and residents at Heaton Woods for the care, friendship and love shown to Dick.
