CALAIS – Richard L. Stevens, 53, a long-time resident of Calais and most recently of Manama, Bahrain, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, in Manama, Bahrain.
Born on April 14, 1970, in Berlin, he was the son of Mac and Sandra (Brown) Stevens. He attended Calais Elementary School and graduated from U32 High School. Rick grew up spending time on his grandparents’ farm, doing what farm kids do, racing a go cart down the hill, riding 4-wheelers and hunting. He also enjoyed school sports like baseball.
On September 14, 1996, he married Yvette Vermette. Following their marriage, they made their home in South Barre, before moving to Calais after his grandfather’s death to help his grandmother care for the family farm. In 2000 they welcomed their son Chandler and in 2002 their daughter Paige. The same week in February that Paige was born they bought Lyle’s Superette, in Washington changing the name to Stevens Country Store. They made Washington their home until they sold the store in 2010. They divorced in 2011.
In January of 2020 he took a job of a lifetime to work on a contract that took him to Bahrain to provide information technology services to the Navy. It was a hard decision for him to make, but it ended up being the right one as Rick fell in love with the country and with Joanne Coronel. He and Joanne made a home there with her daughter Julianna.
While in Bahrain, he loved to golf and spend time with his friends. He was a member of the Royal Gold Club and British Club where he socialized with friends and played golf.
Survivors include his children Chander Stevens and his girlfriend Elizabeth Malnati of Washington, and Paige Stevens and her fiancé Eathan Pike of Calais; his brother Kevin Stevens and his son Jackson of Calais; his nephew Matthew Stevens and his fiancé Emily Babbitt of Evans Mills, NY; his stepbrother Mac Stevens and his wife, Nancy of Las Vegas, NV; and his stepsister Dawn Ross of Alexandria, VA; as well as his former wife, Yvette Vermette-Stevens of Barre, VT; and his fiancé Joanne Coronel and her daughter, Julianna of Bahrain.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Brian Stevens.
The family would like to extend special recognition and appreciation to Angelo Echevarria, one of Rick’s co-workers and a close friend, for all he has done to help Chandler during his trip to Bahrain to handle Rick’s affairs.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284.
The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at a date and time to be announced.
