Richard D. Packert

BARRE - Richard D. Packert, 86, of Mansfield Lane passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023, at his home.  His loving wife, Joy Lee, was by his side.  The last words Richard heard were ‘I will love you forever.”

He joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 18, serving in Morocco as an airplane mechanic and traveled to most U.S. Air Bases in Europe.

Richard was an avid outdoor athlete.  He climbed Mt. Washington 17 times and almost every mountain in the U.S.  He was also an enthusiastic hiker on trails throughout the U.S., including the AppalachianTrail.

He owned in his own construction company that specialized in home extensions for many years.  When he retired, he built his dream house in Rhinebeck with his wife at his side.  Richard and Joy moved to New York City in 2015 and finally settled in Barre on July 4, 2021.

Richard gave many hours over the years to help others in need.  He was an Explorer Scout Post Advisor when he previously lived on Long Island.  He also helped others with their home construction projects, installing garage doors and bathroom cabinets among other things.

One of Richards greatest passions was music. He served on the Board of the Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society in New York for many years where he published programs and built the stage for the Church of the Messiah while continuing his enjoyment of chamber music.

After arriving in Vermont, Richard and Joy adopted two Northern Saw-Whet owls at the North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier.

Richard will be remembered as a wonderful husband and loving father of three sons.  His gentleness, kindness, and sense of humor will be forever cherished.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in The Church of the Good Shepherd, 39 Washington Street, Barre, followed by a reception celebrating his life.
