BARRE – Rachel P. Phillips, 89, of the Lincoln House on Hill Street and a former longtime resident of East Montpelier, passed away Friday, July 3, 2015, at her residence.
Born on March 12, 1926 in Lawsonville, NC, she was the daughter of Walter and Vergie (Spencer) Robertson. She attended school in Lawsonville.
On May 29, 1944, Rachel married Clair Allen Phillips, Jr. in Barre. Following their marriage, they made their home in East Montpelier and Woodbury. Clair died in 1989. Rachel returned to live in Sandy Ridge, NC. While living in Sandy Ridge, she was a member of the Delta United Methodist Church.
For over 15 years, she had worked at the former Rock of Ages Capacitor Plant and the Sprague Electric Company, both of Barre. She and her husband worked as caretakers at the Adamant Music School. Rachel was also a salesperson in the East Montpelier, Plainfield, and Barre area for the Fuller Brush Company. She especially enjoyed cooking, gardening, and sewing.
Survivors include her son, Albert “Steve” Phillips and his wife, Linda of East Montpelier; a daughter-in-law, Doris Phillips of Woodbury; five grandchildren, Scott Phillips and his wife, Kelly, Brent Phillips and his wife, Adrienne, Brian Phillips and his wife, Tracy, Patrick Phillips, and Laurie Stone and her husband, Michael; four great-grandchildren, Brock Phillips, Alicia Laferriere, Claire Phillips, and Benjamin Phillips; one great-great-granddaughter, Quinn Laferriere; two sisters, Doradean and Opal both from North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husbands, Clair Allen Phillips, Jr. who died in 1989 and Wilber Brewer who died in 1996, she was predeceased by her son, Clair Allen Phillips, III; brothers, John William, Sam, and James; and sisters, Irna, Doris, and Magalene.
Her funeral service and the celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Interment will take place in the South Woodbury Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
