BARRE – Priscilla Craig Maxfield, 76, of Cabot Street passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Woodridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.
Born on October 6, 1947, in Northfield, she was adopted at the age of six by Philip A. and Olivia (McKnight) Craig of Barre.
She attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School with the class of 1965. While in high school she played saxophone in the school band and was a member of the Masonic “Rainbow Girls.” Her class was the first to march to and graduate from the “new” Spaulding High School.
On September 12, 1970, she married Whitney J. Maxfield of Barre. They were happily married for 53 years.
After graduation, Priscilla immediately went to work for the National Life Insurance Company of Vermont as a clerk in the Trust Department. She worked there on and off for 29 years, taking time out to have and raise a family and rising to be a manager of the Retirement Product Services Division of the Pension Department from which she retired in 2008.
In between periods of employment at National Life, she worked at home sewing ladies garments for the Porcelain and Lace Company of Plainfield, and Whimsicality of East Barre. Later she was the office manager for Town and Country Real Estate Company of Barre for five years.
Priscilla was a life-long member of the Barre Congregational Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Usher, Deacon, a member of several church committees to include music, mission, and fair committees. She was a member for years of the chancel choir, bell choir, and women’s Christian fellowship. She volunteered for 42 years in the Central Vermont Medical Center gift shop.
Her hobbies included piano playing, golf, skiing, gardening, baking, and sewing American Girl Doll clothes. She served several years when her son was overseas with the Vermont Army National Guard as a volunteer with their family readiness program.
Survivors include her husband Whitney of 53 years, her daughter Ann E. Warrell and her husband, Robert, and their son Jacob of Pittsford, VT; her son Robert D. Maxfield and his son, Braxtin of Barre, VT; her brother David Craig and his wife, Wanda of Montpelier, VT; her brother-in-law Terry Maxfield and his wife, Mary, and their children Todd Maxfield, Allison Lane, Adam Maxfield, Kelly Wilkins, and Ryan Maxfield; her nephew Christopher of Montpelier, VT and her niece Brittany of Carboro, NC as well as her cousins Linda Angelino of Barre, VT and Laurie Harrell of Charlotte, NC.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her aunts Ruth and Olive McKnight, and Mary Chaples, her sister Jane Craig, and a cousin Leslie Pembroke.
The service to honor and celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the Barre Congregational Church, 35 Church Street, Barre. Following the service, interment will take place in Hope Cemetery in Barre. There are no calling hours. A reception will follow at the Mutuo, 20 Beckley Street, Barre.
