EAST MONTPELIER – Peter R. Hill, 79, of Snow Hill Road passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at his home.
Born on June 11, 1946, in Barre, he was the son of Herbert W. and Maria M. (Arcilagos) Hill. He attended Four Corners School in East Montpelier and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1965.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1964 and served in Vietnam Era as an E-5 until he was honorably discharged in 1969. He was a member of the Vermont National Guard from 1974-1978.
On February 16, 1974, he married Mary Ellen Quimby in Larchmont, NY. Following their marriage, they made their home in East Montpelier.
Peter was a truck driver and mechanic. He started working at eight years old on the original McKnight Farm and never stopped working. He worked for Allen Lumber, Dubois Construction, Town of East Montpelier, City of Barre Street Department, Blake’s Used Cars and was currently working for the Barre Town Cemetery Department. For over 20 years he owned Hill’s Repair in East Montpelier. His true passion was maintaining and crop harvesting on the family farm.
He served on the East Montpelier Fire Department in the early 1970’s, as a Selectman for East Montpelier for three terms, and was a long-time member of the East Montpelier Planning Commission.
In his spare time, he enjoyed trains, classic cars and casinos.
Survivors include his wife Mary Ellen Hill, his sons Ramon Q. Hill and his partner Joanna Cohen and Michael W. Hill and his daughter Karen E. Hill; his siblings, he considered Mary Ellen’s siblings his as well, Robert Quimby and his wife, Patsy; Roger Quimby and his wife, Barbara; Gordon Quimby and his wife, Leslie; Robert Ballard; Steven Hardy and his wife, Antonietta; Mark Hardy and his wife, Patty; Deb Hardy and Celso DeSouza; his step-brother Dwight Coffrin; the family matriarch Barbara Gatto; and two cousins Douglas Hill and his wife, Betsy and Robert Hill; as well as six nephews and two nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sibling Janet Ballard, niece Sarah Quimby, and nephew Christopher Quimby.
The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Berlin, 1808 Scott Hill Road, Berlin. There are no calling hours. He has been interred at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
