Peter Gomez

BARRE – Peter “Pete” Gomez, 91, a long-time resident of Barre passed away quietly at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin on Monday, November 13, 2017.

Born on October 25, 1926, he was the son of Josefa Lavin Gomez and Joaquin Gomez, both of whom were from Spain and later immigrated to Barre.

He attended schools in Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1947. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was on active duty from 1945-1946.

On September 17, 1955 he married Edith Fontana. They were married for sixty-two years and lived on Leonard Street most of that time.

For forty-two years Peter was a well-known sales representative for Bailey Brothers Auto Parts in Barre. He retired from the company in 1992. He received several awards from them for top salesmanship.

Pete was a member of the Granite Masonic Lodge #35, Granite Chapter #26 RAM, Barre Council #22 R and SM, St. Aldemar Commandry #11 K.T. all of Barre and Mount Sinai Shrine Temple #3 of Montpelier.

He also belonged to the Mutuo, Inc., and had been a member of the Barre Elks Lodge #1535 and the Barre Country Club where he was an avid golfer and enjoyed many hours there with his friends. In earlier years he hunted deer in Vermont. Vacations to the Maine beaches with his family were special times.

Peter is survived by his wife, Edith; daughter Jo-Ann Ornitz and her husband, Michael and his cherished granddaughter Rachel. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews who live throughout the United States and who lovingly remember him as well.

He was predeceased by all of his brothers and sisters.

The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Interment will follow the service at Hope Cemetery in Barre. Friends and family may call on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
