PLAINFIELD - Nancy (Bliss) Martin, 89, a 70-year resident, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, February 28, 2019, with her family at her side.
Born on October 11, 1929 on the Bliss family farm in East Montpelier, the seventh of eight children of Harry F. Bliss Sr. and Vera (Patrick) Bliss. She attended elementary school in North Montpelier and graduated from Middlebury High School in 1946 with third honors.
On October 6, 1948, Nancy married the love of her life, Elton L. Martin of Plainfield. Elton passed away in 1971.
She worked for Noyle Johnson Insurance for over 50 years until her final retirement in 2012 at 82. To the end there she was a valued team member, a sharp dresser and always up for a costume party in cahoots with The Durkee Girls.
Nancy loved music and passed this appreciation onto her family. She played piano all of her life, along with a little ukulele, accordion and guitar. Her keen memory, along with the diaries she kept and those she collected made her a great resource for family and local history. She also served as an Auditor for the town of Plainfield for several years. Additionally, Nancy was an avid Red Sox and Celtics fan, and faithfully attended her granddaughters’ softball games.
She was a loving and beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother who was never happier than in the company of her family at home, at the kids’ events and at every celebration.
Survivors include her sons Jeffrey Martin (Deanna) of Marshfield and Kerry Martin (Deb) of Norwich; grandchildren Jesse Martin of Barre, Andrew Martin of Burlington, Kate Martin (Josh Lockwood) of Eden and Betsy Martin of South Burlington; her precious great-grandson Silas Lockwood of Eden; her sister Hester Brinckerhoff (Derek) of Santa Fe, NM; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Elton, her sisters Hilda Lawson, Doreen Sanville, and Isma Farquharson, and by her brothers Harry Bliss Jr., Donald Bliss, and Brian Bliss.
A graveside service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in Plainmont Cemetery in East Montpelier.
Nancy’s family would especially like to thank the caring and dedicated staff at Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing.
