BARRE - Murielle R. “Midge” Nichols, 68, of Barre, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 7, 2015 in Englewood, Florida.
Midge was born November 11, 1946 to Patrick and Jeannine (Rouleau) Roy in San Sebastien, Quebec, Canada. Jeannine died when Midge was just 2 years old. Patrick remarried and his new wife Aurelienne raised her as her own. She spent a large part of her childhood in Kingfield, Maine, but her parents settled in Barre and she graduated from Marian High School in 1964. After high school, she completed her LPN at Thompson Nursing School in Brattleboro and went on to complete her RN as an adult, graduating from Vermont College with her B.S. in 1988. Her nursing career spanned over 40 years, beginning in Norwood, MA, working in Plattsburg, NY and finally back to Berlin, VT at CVMC. Over the years, countless people expressed their appreciation for her efficient, friendly presence in the operating room. She made many friendships there, which continued after her retirement in 2012 after many dedicated years of service.
Previously married to Jeffrey Cavanaugh and David Drew, Midge found true companionship and happiness with her husband George Nichols. Together they enjoyed camping, traveling and gathering with their many friends. They loved line dancing and the two would light up the dance floor together at any event. For the past few years, they spent some of the winter in sunny Florida. It was a nice community where they felt home away from home.
Devoted to her daughter Stephanie, the two shared a special bond, which continued with her grandson, Chase, and new granddaughter Kate. Chase will forever have a special place in his heart for his Grammy. She will always be watching over them.
An avid reader, you could always find Midge with a new book. She loved the beach and spending time with her grandchildren. Midge had compassion for all, showering family and friends with love and help. Family was her priority, through her constant caring of others she was a true matriarch. She was the anchor in her sisters’ group, “the girls.” She will be missed greatly by so many.
Midge leaves her husband George Nichols of Barre; daughter Stephanie Drew and her partner Jeremy Gonyon, grandchildren Chase and Kate of Moretown; sisters Sue Trecartin of West Danville, Joanne Cyr and husband Kevin of East Barre; brother Alan Roy and wife Shelly of Websterville; lifelong friend and confidant Marion Kibbee of Norwood, MA; in-laws and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Aurelienne Roy and her beloved sister pauline Stebar.
