Molly O. McCarthy

Williamstown - Molly Ora McCarthy of South Hill passed away on December 20, 2025, at her home with her loving husband by her side.

Born on November 20, 1945, in Barre City, she was the daughter of Ned and Evelyn (Bailey) Winters. She attended and graduated from Williamstown Schools. She married Leonard A. McCarthy on August 10, 1963. They made their home and raised their three boys Scott, Mark and Todd in Williamstown.

Lenny and Molly opened Lenny’s Shoe and Apparel in downtown Barre in 1990, beginning a family business that would expand to five more locations throughout the state and New York. Woven throughout the continued success of Lenny’s was Molly’s dedication and commitment to the success of the company that she helped to build.

In her spare time, Molly enjoyed tending to her many flower beds and mowing her lawns both in Vermont and at her second home in Maine. Often referred to as “camp”, Maine was a beloved place to Molly, and she cherished sharing this place with her closest friends and family. She enjoyed playing cards with her many friends as well as traveling to the west coast to visit family. Molly also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, where she frequented sports games and school events. She had a special love for her two goats, Boots and Nemo.

Survivors include her husband Leonard A. McCarthy, her children Scott and his wife, Cheryl, Mark and his wife, Kristin, Todd and his partner, Trevor; her grandchildren Sean and Ryan McCarthy, Ella and Ned McCarthy, Ashley and Brody Brown; great-grandchildren Carson, Riley and Chase McCarthy; her brother Philip and sister-in-law Yvonne Winters and many more nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Milo, David and Marvin Winters.

A special thank you goes out to the care takers at Woodridge Nursing Home and Home Health and Hospice. Molly had a special place in her heart for those who cared for her over the past 14 months. She was internally grateful for the exceptional care that allowed her to feel comfort and peace.

A Celebration of Life for Molly will be held at the Barre Elks Club on Sunday, January 25, 2026, from 1-4 pm. All those able to join in this celebration are welcome. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641. Arrangements are by Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.
