ORANGE – Michael William Stone, 61, a longtime Orange resident and Barre businessman, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 9, 2018.
Born on September 27, 1957 in Barre City, he was the son of William and Karlene (Martin) Stone. He attended local elementary schools and graduated from Spaulding High School as part of the Class of 1975.
Following his graduation, Mike went to work at some local businesses including Winn’s Gulf, Rouleau Granite and Breer Brothers Inc. In 1985, he became an incorporating officer at Stone’s Service Station on Washington Street in Barre. He worked there for 33 years and was loved and respected by not only his customers, but by the Central Vermont community as a whole.
On July 16, 1983, he married Mary Hebert in the St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. They made their home in the Barre area and raised two wonderful children. Mary passed away in 2002.
In 2003, he met Terri Crawford and they became inseparable. The two of them blended their families and moved to their home in Orange in 2005.
Throughout Mike’s life, he had many hobbies and interests that meant a lot to him. He was passionate about snowmobiling, ATVing, hunting, fishing, working around their home and most importantly spending time with his family and friends. Summer vacations were always spent on a lake where he could enjoy a boat ride in the early morning with his coffee to watch the sunrise, with line & hook in the water. He also enjoyed going for a ride in his suburban during the worst of a snowstorm, and riding the back roads looking for wildlife on the weekend year round.
Mike was known for his dedication and tireless support of many local causes. Especially his support of the Central Vermont ATV Club and his community. His dedication will sorely be missed.
Survivors include his fiancé Terri Crawford of Orange; his daughter Alicia Stone and her husband, Paul Swann; his son Nick Stone of Orange; two stepdaughters, Ashley Kennett and her husband, Josh, and Britney McAdams; and two grandchildren Kolby McAdams and Macie Kennett. He also leaves his step-mother Sue Stone of Barre; brother Tim Stone of Orange; step-brothers Frank and Peter Angelico; step-sister Valerie Greer and their families; his aunt Phyllis Mann; his brother-in-law David Reed; his great-uncle Gordon Stone as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Mary and his sister Cindy Reed.
A service to honor and celebrate Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Websterville Baptist Church, where his family has been attending for four generations. Burial will follow in the Wilson Cemetery in Barre Town. Family and friends may call on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.
Memorial contributions in Mike’s name may be made to the Central Vermont ATV Club, PO Box 665, Washington, Vermont 05675.
Mike’s family would like to thank the community for the outpouring of love and support that they have received during this trying time.
