Michael Dean Gilbert, 78, passed peacefully, at home on September 16, 2026, after a courageous battle that he fought gallantly and bravely.

Born March 15, 1948, in Montpelier, Vermont, Mike was the son of Betty Ballou and Dean Gilbert. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Laura Gilbert.

Michael grew up in Northfield, Vermont before moving to Barre, where he graduated from Spaulding High School in 1966. He attended Castleton State College, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.

Education became one of the great passions of Mike’s life. He began his teaching career at Green Mountain Union High School, where he also coached baseball. He later taught business and driver’s education at Spaulding High School and went on to teach business at Union 32. Michael cared deeply about his students and believed that every student was important. His connection with students did not end when they graduated. He remained involved with the Spaulding High School community for decades, maintaining friendships and communication with former students and helping create a scholarship through the Spaulding Class of 1966 for graduating seniors.

Michael’s dedication to education and his community allowed him to touch countless lives. He had a genuine ability to make people feel valued and remembered, and he left a lasting impression on the students, colleagues, friends, and families fortunate enough to know him.

His commitment to his community extended well beyond the classroom. Michael served as secretary of the Canadian Club for 30 years and was a member of the Elks Club, Mutuo Club, and the Masons. He gave his time generously and built friendships wherever he went.

Above all, Mike was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Gilbert; daughter Betsy (Gilbert) Memmolo and her husband, Mark, and their daughter, Rose; daughter Karen (Gilbert) Donegan and her husband, Chris, and their sons, Max and Charlie. He was a dedicated father and grandfather who never missed the important moments in their lives. Whether it was hockey, field hockey, baseball, football, or lacrosse, Mike was their biggest supporter—cheering loudly and proudly from the sidelines capturing moments with camera in hand.

A lifelong avid camper, talented craftsman, and devoted family man, Mike found joy in simple things: time with family, helping others, working with his hands, and making memories. He was also a proud and widely known New York Yankees fan. Through good seasons and bad, Mike remained a loyal fan and was always ready to share his thoughts on the Yankees with anyone willing to listen.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, former students, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His lessons, kindness, laughter, stories, craftsmanship, friendships, and unwavering love for his family will live on in the many lives he touched.

Mike fought his final battle with the same courage and quiet strength with which he lived his life. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of love that will never be forgotten.

Calling hours will take place on Thursday October 1, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00p.m at the Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Suite 1, Barre, VT. Per Mikes wishes a private graveside service will be held at the convenience of his family.
