BARRE – Melvin Douglas Christie, “Mel”, 79, a longtime Barre resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. His loving family had been with him at his bedside.

Born on April 18, 1939 in Barre City, he was the son of Wilfred and Myrtle “Doris” (Lawliss) Christie. He attended local schools and graduated from Williamstown High School in 1957. Following his graduation, Mel enlisted in the United States Army. He served with distinction for four years until being honorably discharged in 1961.

On August 25, 1962 he married the love of his life, Marge Champine, in the St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. The two made their home in the Montpelier area where they raised their four wonderful children. Afterward they moved to Barre living there the rest of their lives.

Mel spent his entire working career as a Master Electrician, working for electrical contractor Bates and Murray.

Throughout his life he had many hobbies and interests. The most important of these included watching sports, especially his beloved Boston Celtics and Red Sox, woodworking, coin collecting, following NASCAR, cruising in his ’49 Chevy and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his two daughters Sueann Clark and her husband, Stephen of Williamstown; and Lori-ann Christie of Barre; two sons Mark Christie and Mike Christie, both of Barre; two granddaughters Jessica Christie of Stuart, VA and Brittany Christie of Georgetown, TX and his grandson Shane Christie of Barre, as well as four great-grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers Noel Christie of Barre and Butch Christie of Randolph; his sister Marilyn Partch of El Paso, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marge Christie, and his brother Bruce Christie.

A gathering to honor and celebrate Mel’s life will be held on a later date at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in the Maplewood Cemetery in Barre Town in the spring.
