Mary Alice (Robins) Abbey, a resident of South Hadley, Massachusetts for over 60 years, died in Boston, Massachusetts on January 7, 2015 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Mary (Smollet) Robins and George Robins of Barre, Vermont. Mary was sadly predeceased by her husband, Dr. Carl E. Abbey, and her oldest son, Carl E. Abbey, Jr.
She was born in and attended school in Barre. Mary graduated from Colby Junior College in New London, New Hampshire, and the Forsyth Dental School in Boston.
In 1942, she married Dr. Carl E. Abbey. After World War II, they moved to South Hadley, and Carl practiced dentistry in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Her life is honored by her children Lee Wyker of Carmel, California, Donald Abbey of Bradbury, California and Robin Murphy of Hadley, Massachusetts.
In past years Mary enjoyed an active volunteer role in various community activities, including the Holyoke Hospital Auxiliary, The Junior League of Holyoke, the Skinner Clinic dental program, PTA, Center Church Women, and at Loomis Village where she moved in 2004. She looked forward to her Tuesday Club, Dow Janes Investment Club, and Reading Club meetings.
There are no calling hours. Interment will be private at Elmwood Cemetery in Barre, at the convenience of the family. Hooker-Whitcomb Funeral Home of Barre will schedule arrangements. A memorial celebration will be announced at a later date.
