BARRE - Mary Jean Calcagni passed away last Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the age of 92. Even in the final hours of her life, she had a remarkable ability to gather people around her so they could swap stories, jokes, and, of course, ‘the gossip’.

A Barre native, Mary Jean was born in the city on the coldest day of that year: December 30, 1933. She was the third child of Rose (Tomasi) Sassone and Vincent Sassone, an emigrant from Italy. Growing up on Camp Street, she forged friendships she would treasure for a lifetime. She attended Lincoln Elementary and then Spaulding High School, where she proved to be an exceptional student and baton twirler for the majorette team.

She often recounted her surprise and pride upon being accepted to Middlebury College and how she spent the first semester so homesick that she called her mother nearly every day. Eventually, after her mother politely reminded her of the rising phone bill, Mary Jean did what she did best and immersed herself in community. She kept a meticulous scrapbook of her Middlebury years and made lifelong friends. After graduating, she spent two years working in Boston for Bell Telephone Company, but later moved back to Barre to be closer to her mother.

Upon returning home, her best friend reintroduced her to an old classmate, Joseph Calcagni. Though she’d originally known him as the short water boy for Spaulding’s Football team, she was pleasantly surprised to see Joe had undergone a growth spurt in the Navy. They married in 1958, and together they built a home on Edgewood Avenue where they raised their five children.

For 65 years, Mary Jean had an uncanny ability to navigate her husband’s lofty hosting habits and “fiery” personality. If it weren’t for her, hundreds of dinners, lunches, and cocktail parties never would have happened. Judging by her grace and good humor, guests would never guess the hours of painstaking preparation and effort she put into making sure each guest felt comfortable and welcome. Her steady, often backstage devotion to her family and friends was evident in almost every aspect of her life as she managed the books for her husband’s business, maintained the household, kept an immaculate calendar of birthdays and anniversaries, and cared for her mother in her final years.

Even as her memory and health began to fail, people were drawn to Mary Jean for her caring nature and endless wit. Her family felt fortunate to be able to spend her final days with her, reminiscing and gabbing. Her absence will be acutely felt, but her spirit will live on in her children, Joseph Calcagni (Joni) Calcagni, of West Danville, Andrea MacLeod (Robert) of Barre, Jeannie McCallum (Niall) of Cabot, Matthew Calcagni and his wife Hilary Calcagni, of Waterbury, Tony Calcagni (Beth), of Morrisville, her grandchildren; Allie, Tom, Joe, Vin, Isabella, Nick, Lucia, Mateo, Sophia, and Olivia, as well as her great-grandchildren; Rosie, Evelyn, Vera and Frank, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and friends.

Her family would like to thank Dr. Robert Robinson for forty years of care and compassion; the Gary Residence of Montpelier for the superb care they extended in the final two and one-half years of her life, and the good friends that she made there and enjoyed so much.

A Mass of Christian Burial to honor and celebrate Mary Jean’s life will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Monica Catholic Church, 79 Summer Street, Barre. Burial will take place in the Hope Cemetery in Barre at a later date.
