Marshall J. Stone

April 18, 1929 — December 13, 2019

Barre

BARRE – Marshall J. Stone passed away peacefully on Friday, December 13, 2019 at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 18, 1929 at the Barre City Hospital, he was the son of Dewey and Ella (Wilson) Stone. He attended North Barre and Brook Street Schools and was a graduate of Spaulding High School, class of 1947.

Two years later, Marshall married his soul mate and the love of his life, Gloria Cristofoletti, on November 19, 1949. They resided in Barre where they raised their three children.

While pursuing a career in auto mechanics, Marshall attended classes at the University of Vermont and received professional training at the Lincoln-Mercury Division of the Ford Motor Company. He was employed for over twenty years at Ortiz Motor Sales, where he worked in various roles, including head mechanic and service manager. He also worked for Twin City Transmission. In 1994 he retired from Spaulding High School as an automotive vocational teacher after fifteen years of service.

He was a member of the Barre Elks Club, Canadian Club, Barre Fish and Game Club, and the Vermont Retired Teachers Association.

Marshall was an avid reader and life-long learner who had a love for history. Marshall’s impressive collection of National Geographic magazines and 1000-page history books were a common sight at the Stone household. He also enjoyed historical documentaries. As an accomplished outdoorsman, Marshall enjoyed deer hunting in the fall and rabbit hunting in the winter when he wasn’t busy snowmobiling. In the summer months, he always loved to go camping and fishing with family and friends. A summer was never complete without a yearly trip to Wells, Maine, where he would spend endless hours with the younger family members searching for sand dollars, shells and crabs. Spring fishing on Lake Champlain with his father (Dewey), brother (Richard), and son (Alan), was a special annual event.

He was a kind, warm-hearted, loving, compassionate husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

Survivors include his wife Gloria of 70 years of marriage; two daughters Linda LeRoy and her husband, John; Donna Gagnon and her husband, Rejean; and a son Alan Stone and his wife, Julieta; six grandchildren Heather Douglas, Kimberly Farnum, Heidi Davies, Tammi Marocco, Stephanie Stone and Britney Stone; seven great-grandchildren, his brother Richard Stone as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marshall was predeceased by his parents and half-brother Ronald Wilson.
