NORTHFIELD – Marlene Velander, 90, a former resident of Berlin, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield.
Born on February 12, 1934, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Carl and Mildred (Tracy) Johnson. She attended local elementary schools and graduated from Northfield High School in 1952. Later in life she went back to school and received her associate degree in 1976.
In 1954, she married Allan Velander. Following their marriage, they made their home in Berlin. They enjoyed spending their summers on Nelson Pond in Calais. Allan passed away on October 2, 2019.
In her earlier years, Marlene was employed by National Life Insurance Company and Bates
Murray Electric as a secretary/bookkeeper. She later went on to work for many years running the U-32 High School media center. In 1997 Marlene joined the staff of the Vermont House clerk’s office where she retired from in 2011.
In her spare time, she enjoyed spending many summers at the family camp on Nelson Pond as well as dancing the night away with her husband Allan at the Montpelier Elks Club.
Survivors include her daughter Lori Velander and her son Christopher Lackey and his wife, Kasey Haskins of Waterbury Center, VT and her son Larry Velander and his wife, Christine and their son, Max of Denver, NC, her brother Robert Johnson of North Carolina and her sister Bette Bailey of Pennsylvania.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Allan Velander.
The graveside service to honor and celebrate her life as well as her beloved husband Allan will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the Berlin Corner Cemetery, Berlin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may made to the Mayo Activity Fund, 71 Richardson Street, Northfield, VT 05663.
