EAST CALAIS – It is with heavy hearts and immense sadness that the family of the much-loved Marlene C. Batchelder announces that this precious woman gained her well-deserved wings on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
Born on April 5, 1935, in Barre, she was the daughter of William J. and Mary (Benedini) Corriveau. She attended schools in Barre and for a short time in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Spaulding High School in 1954.
On April 23, 1955, she married the love of her life, Ernest E. Batchelder. After their marriage, Marlene worked at Howard Johnson’s Restaurant while Ernest was overseas in Germany serving with the U.S. Air Force. After 18 months overseas, they lived in Corpus Christi, Texas until his discharge when they moved to Missouri for a short time where she was a substitute teacher at a college. Upon returning to Vermont, they lived in South Barre and later East Barre, then Barre and later in Barre Town.
Marlene worked at People’s Bank, Interstate Equipment, Washington Electric, National Life Insurance and retired from Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice to take care of her husband until his death on January 15, 1998.
In her spare time, she enjoyed painting, knitting, crocheting and cross stitching.
Survivors include her daughter Cynthia (Gary) Benjamin of Woodbury; her grandchildren Trevor (Amber) Thompson of Essex Jct., Kayce (Tim) Jeram of Graniteville; her step-grandchildren Jamie (Jennifer Huoppi) Benjamin of Woodbury; Wade (Rebekah Martin) Benjamin of Hardwick; and special granddaughter Liz Norton of Barre; her great-grandchildren Harper Thompson, Austin and Jordyn Jeram, Jacob Benjamin, and Asher and Lyrah Benjamin.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband Ernest, her in-laws Edward and Mertie Batchelder, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Doris and Ralph Peake, her infant brother, and her infant great-granddaughter Stella Benjamin.
Per her wishes, there will be a private family funeral with no calling hours.
Her family would like to thank the following for her care and their kindness, Rachel Greene, DNP and staff with Central Vermont Medical Center. The amazing team at Bayada Home Health and Hospice with special mention to Kristina, Sarah, Emily, Stephanie, and Patti and many more – too many to mention, but you know who you are. Special thanks to Pam White for her support and meals, and also to Crystal Rogers for her support, help caring for mom and for being there as she gained her wings.
