WILLIAMSTOWN - Marion Helen “Tillie” Wood, 92, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2016 under the loving care of her daughter Lorie and son-in-law Steve Garand at their home on Ferno Road.
She was born July 9, 1923 in Adamant, VT to Anna and Edward Ferris. She grew up in Websterville, graduating from Spaulding High School in 1941 and the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing in 1943 as a registered nurse.
On December 15, 1945 she married the love of her life, James A. Wood upon his return from the War in Europe. They lived in Graniteville.
In 1952 they moved to Windsor Locks, CT and in 1955 to Enfield, CT. Helen worked as a nurse at various hospitals and nursing homes. She became the neighbor to go to for ailments, even delivering a neighbor’s baby.
In 1965 she and her family returned to Vermont where Helen and Jim ran the Putnam Rest Nursing Home in Putnamville, VT until 1978. From Putnamville they moved to Woodland Drive in Barre and Helen continued to work at the former McFarland House Nursing Home.
After “her Jim” passed in 1983, Helen continued to work until retirement in 1990. In retirement she spent living and enjoying her many friends at Williamstown Square. Her pride in her Irish heritage was known by all that knew her and a trip she took to Ireland fulfilled a life long dream.
Her final years were spent with her daughter Lorie, son-in-law Steve and granddaughter Cidney at their home in Williamstown. She spent her days watching the birds from her chair or rooting for the Boston Red Sox. She especially enjoyed all the family and friends that came to visit her and reminisce over the years.
She had a special place in her heart for all her animals. She had cats, dogs, birds, and even a pet duck. Her last pets were a dog, Swazey, and cat, Max, who kept her company at the Square.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Jim and brothers Howard and Russell Pruneau, and Robert Ferris. She leaves behind six children: Edward Wood and wife Joanne of Wilton, NH; Joanne Davidson and husband Robert of Ocala, FL; Robert Wood and wife Alyce and Lorie Garand and husband Steven all of Williamstown; James Wood of Worcester, and Phillip Klatt Wood of Lake Worth, FL. Helen had thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
Helen was a loving and caring mother and a friend to all who knew her. We have been blessed to be a part of her life. She will be dearly missed.
The Mass of Christian burial to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Edwards Church on Beckett Street in Williamstown. There will be no calling hours.
