Marcia M. Pauly

March 11, 1941 — December 4, 2023

East Montpelier

EAST MONTPELIER - Marcia Mackenzie Pauly, 82, of East Montpelier, Vermont died peacefully at home on Monday, December 4, 2023, with her loving family by her side.

Born on March 11, 1941, in Barre, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late Neale and Manuela “Emma” (Cobo) Mackenzie.

Marcia was a graduate of Spaulding High School where she was president of the junior American Red Cross and created many friendships that lasted to this day. She then attended the Newport Hospital School of Nursing in Newport, RI. For five years, she was a Medical Record Librarian at the Barre City Hospital.

As a stay-at-home mom raising her two children, Marcia volunteered at numerous church youth groups and at the East Montpelier Elementary School. She ultimately became an Administrative Assistant to the Principal at the school for 15 years. It was at the elementary school where she met many lifelong friends and used her compassionate nature to help many children.

On June 7, 1975, Marcia married the love of her life, John “Jack” L. Pauly, at the Barre Congregational Church.  In May 1976, they moved from Montpelier to Powder Horn Glen Road, East Montpelier, where she lived until the time of her death.

Marcia greatly enjoyed annual spring trips to Florida and summer vacations to Cape Cod with her family.  She and Jack took many long road trips with their sons camping and exploring the U.S.  Marcia was a devout Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching an annual game at Fenway and every other game of the season on TV with Jack. She enjoyed gardening, and reading as well as volunteering at and attending her children’s sporting events at U-32 High School. In her later years Marcia and Jack enjoyed many Senior Dinners at the Barre Elks Club and Chicken Pie Suppers with lifelong friends from Barre.

Spending time in Massachusetts with her grandchildren was very special to Marcia.  She was a sports and music enthusiast; she watched school band and chorus concerts and loved to cheer from the sidelines of many playing fields and sports courts.  Marcia never missed a birthday or important life milestone celebration. Marcia also loved pets, none more than her two cats Fluffo and Ginger.

She leaves her husband of 48 years John “Jack” L. Pauly; her brothers Allan Mackenzie and his wife, Janet of Milton, VT and Steven Mackenzie and his wife, Claudia of Barre, VT; her two sons, Eric F. Pauly and his wife, Catherine of Groton, MA, and Mark M. Pauly and his wife Katie of Norfolk, MA as well as five beautiful grandchildren Mackenzie Pauly, Thomas Pauly, Jonathan Pauly from Eric and Cathy and Ciara Pauly and Dillon Pauly from Mark & Katie.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her aunt N. Natina “Teenie” Calcagni all of Barre, VT.

The service to honor and celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. in the Barre Congregational Church, 35 Church Street, Barre, VT.  Family and friends may call on Monday, December 11, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street.
