BARRE TOWN – Marcell L. Smith, 92, of Messier Drive, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at his home with his family at his bedside.
Born on June 10, 1924 in Orange, he was the son of Nathan and Carrie (Hunt) Smith.
Marcell attended Cutler Corner Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1943.
On June 30, 1945, he married Ruby Franks at the family farm in Orange. Marcell built their home on the East Barre Road and together they raised their five children there. Ruby died on January 9, 1974. On August 15, 1975, he married Beth Archer and they also resided at the same location.
Marcell was employed as a maintenance worker in the granite industry. He started his career in 1950 at Jones Brothers and then worked at Marr and Gordon for many years, but he took great pride in having worked for Rock of Ages for a quarter of a century.
Marcell’s life was centered around his family. In the 50’s he built a camp on Lake Groton where his family spent their summers. It has been the favorite gathering place for not only his children but his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His favorite winter sport was snowmobiling and he shared this love with family and friends. He was an active member of the Sno-Bees snow machine club and at the age of 90 decided to retire his machine after 50 years of riding. Between his summer activities at camp and snowmobiling he enjoyed hunting. In his retirement years, he spent hours in his woodworking shop crafting beautiful furniture and other items for family and friends.
Survivors include his wife Beth of Barre Town; his daughters Sandra Safford and her husband, David of Calais; Susan Graves and her husband, Gordon of South Carolina; and Sheila Smith of South Carolina; his sons Ronald and wife Susan Smith of Marshfield; and David Smith and his wife, Robin of Orange; his step-son Alan Archer and his wife, Brenda of Florida; step-daughter Sally Leszko and her husband Ed of Barre; and step-son Hal Archer of Barre; six grandchildren; Denise Douin, Kristina Powell, Carrie Harmon, Nathan Smith, Jake and Dylan Smith, three step-grandchildren; Stephen, Jeannine, and Kathy Archer; twelve great-grandchildren; Kameron, Kyle, and Kya Douin; Anika, Sam, Saku, Ben, Braedyn and Katja Powell; Jake Harmon; and Garrett and Makenzie Smith; two step-great grandchildren Chris and Joshua Archer; and his sister Ondree Griggs of Plainfield.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ruby, grandson Dwayne Hudson, brother Francis Smith, and step-son Calvin Archer.
There are no calling hours but family and friends are invited to a memorial service celebrating Marcell’s life at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 244 Hersey Road, Montpelier on Saturday, February 18 th at 2 pm. The family will have a private grave-side service at the Plain-Mont Cemetery in East Montpelier in the spring.
