BARRE - Lucy Agosta Wolcott, a long-time resident of Barre, died September 1 in Falls Church, Virginia, after a brief illness. She was 98 years, 7 months, and a few precious days old. Lucy was bright, funny and loving. Her generous heart, sharp mind, playful spirit and her giggle will be greatly missed.
Lucy (Lucia Evelina) was born in Barre on January 22, 1919 to Carmela (Calienni) and Emanuele Agosta. She attended schools in Winooski, Waterbury and Barre, and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1936. She worked for many years as a secretary for the Rock of Ages Corporation in Graniteville. She later took great pride in working in the office of Vermont Governor Deane C. Davis. She volunteered through numerous organizations in Barre, supporting the community in every way that she could.
The love of Lucy’s life was Stanley E. Wolcott, whom she married on August 21, 1949 at St. Monica’s Church. Stan introduced Lucy to the joys of fishing and together they spent many happy hours trolling the waters of Lake Willoughby. They celebrated their 50 th anniversary among friends and family in 1999, before Stanley’s death in December 2003.
Lucy loved to play Bingo and could be found most Mondays and Fridays (and sometimes Wednesdays, too!) playing Bingo at St. Monica’s or the Mutuo. She also loved to play cards, beating her family at Thirty-one until her last days. Among her most cherished memories was meeting President Obama in the Oval Office for her 92 nd birthday.
In addition to her parents, Lucy was predeceased by three siblings: Pasquale (Pat) Agosta, Nevio (Gus) Agosta, and Jenny Catherine who died in infancy. Her remaining sibling is Nancy A. Perrelli of Annandale, Virginia. Other relatives include: nephew Thomas J. Perrelli (wife Kristine and children James, Alexander, Thomas and Samuel) of Arlington, Virginia; niece Caryn Perrelli Trivett (husband Scott and children Matthew and Melissa) of Fairfax, Virginia; niece JoAnne Agosta Mead (husband Curt and daughter Ashley Mead Cavolo and family) of Keene, New Hampshire; and niece Carol Agosta of Vernon, Connecticut. Her niece Nancy Agosta Southwell of Keene, New Hampshire died in October 2014 (first husband Bob Arnone; son Adam Arnone and family of Peterborough, New Hampshire; second husband Pete Southwell of Keene, New Hampshire).
Lucy’s family will receive friends on Sunday, September 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, 79 Summer Street, Barre. Interment at Hope Cemetery will follow.
