EAST BARRE – Leo H. Dexter, 92, of Waterman Street, died peacefully Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at his home in East Barre with his wife of seventy-one years by his side.
Born on February 20, 1924 in Topsham, he was one of twelve children to Leander and Anna (Smith) Dexter.
Leo was raised on a farm in Corinth and Topsham where he lived and worked until he met his wife, Marjorie Avery. They married on July 16, 1944. Following their marriage, they made their home in New Hampshire and Vermont moving to East Barre in 1962.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator and then a heavy equipment mechanic for the Hill-Martin Corporation in Barre until his retirement in 1986.
Leo enjoyed camping, gardening and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Dexter of East Barre; his children, Donald Dexter and his wife, Maggie of Williamstown and Florida, Douglas Dexter and his life partner, Alice Sue Jones of Calais, and daughter, Maryann Hebert and her husband, Alan of East Barre; ten grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eunice McLam and Evelyn Moulton; and nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers, Harold, Martin, King, Leo’s twin, Lewis, and Everett and four sisters, Bernice, Blanche, Cerola, and Freda.
His funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service.
Entombment will be in the Hooker and Whitcomb Vault in Barre to await spring interment in the Brook Haven Cemetery in Orange.
