Karen L. Houghton

BARRE - Karen Lynn Houghton, 62, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, VT with her family by her side.

Born on September 20, 1961, in Hardwick, VT, she was the daughter of Raymond L. Houghton and Olive Searles Houghton Wilson. Karen joined her sister, Crystal and brother, Wayne completing their family of five.

Raised in Concord, VT Karen went on to reside and work in numerous Vermont towns until later moving to Skowhegan, ME to live near her sister Crystal Deck and her family. She lived in Skowhegan, ME until May 2022 when she moved to Barre, VT to live with her beloved Guardian Angel cousin Cecile Gendron, who watched over and cared for Karen in the last years of her life.

Karen loved sports and played an aggressive softball and basketball game in her youth. In later years, her love for the Patriots was evident in her enthusiastic yelling and swearing during games.

She had a deep hearty laugh, and a lot of love for her family, stepparents, friends, and her pets (especially golden retriever Lacey J, and her many kitty cats). Karen had a wonderful sense of humor, and you could tell she was up to mischief by her expressive big brown eyes. She enjoyed taking long walks (until her health prevented it), her creative outlet of coloring, and laughing with friends.

Karen was known for her delicious buttery mashed potatoes at holiday meals, her many years working in the Skowhegan, ME community at DeckCopy and the local drive-in movie theater, and as a feisty card game player (especially cribbage).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. in the Bible Baptist Church, 68 Vine Street, Berlin, VT of which Karen was a cherished member.
