John A. Zagroba, M.D.

BARRE CITY – John Anthony Zagroba, M.D., 91, a longtime resident of Camp Street, passed to life eternal on December 30, 2015 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington with his loving family at his bedside and nearby.
Born February 23, 1924 in West Rutland, he was the son of Teofile and Frances (Rytel) Zagroba. He was a graduate of St. Stanislaus Kostka Elementary School and of West Rutland High School in the class of 1942.
During World War II, John served in the United States Coast Guard and U.S. Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet in the V-5 program.
He graduated from the University of Vermont in the Pre-Medical Program in 1949 and from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1953, and completed his internship and Urological residency at the former Mary Fletcher and Bishop DeGoesbriand Hospitals in Burlington.
From 1957 to 1987 he maintained his urology practice in the Central Vermont area, serving on the Medical Staffs of the Former Barre City Hospital, Heaton Hospital in Montpelier, Gifford Hospital in Randolph, Copley Hospital in Morrisville, Hardwick Hospital, Mayo Hospital in Northfield and the still current Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury and the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin.
Dr. Zagroba was one of the physicians who was instrumental in the planning of the Central Vermont Hospital and the merging of the Barre City Hospital and Heaton Hospital Medical Staffs.
On July 19, 1952 he married Mary J. Fryzell in West Rutland, and his greastest pleasure was to be at home with his devoted loving wife and five children. He enjoyed doing house and grounds maintenance and upkeep.
His memberships included, St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre, The former Marian High School School Board and he was a third degree member of the Bishop Brady Council #11, of the Knights of Columbus.
Professional memberships included the Washington County, The Vermont State and American Medical Societies, and the New England and American Urological Societies.
Besides his wife, Mary, he leaves two sons; John Zagroba, Jr. who resides at home, and Richard Zagroba and his wife Enriquetta, of New Rochelle, NY and three daughters; Dr. Katherine Zagroba and her husband Dr. Paul McManus of Bow, NH, Debra Zagroba, also residing at home and Dr. Marie Zagroba and her husband David Barker of Burlington, as well as 11 grandchildren, and 1 great grandson, and nieces and nephews including, Alexandra Buturla and Francis and Joseph Hryckiewitz.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Raymond Zagroba, and two sisters, Lucy Sklodowski and Eugene Osciolowski.
The Mass of Christian Burial to honor the life of Dr. Zagroba will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre.
