BARRE – John F. McKnight, 86, of North Main Street, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at his home with his loving family at his bedside.
Born on December 25, 1929 in Barre, he was the son of David and Mildred (Martin) McKnight. John attended local elementary schools and Spaulding High School, leaving in 1947 to serve in the U.S. Navy in the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1952.
Upon his return home, John was employed as a Maintenance Technician at Rouleau Granite Company for many years. He married Mildred R. Lupien in February of 1972 in Barre. They first made their home in Barre, then East Barre before moving back to Barre. Mildred died on May 25, 2013.
John was a member of the Barre Lodge of Elks #1535 and the Canadian Club. He was a champion cribbage player, enjoyed woodworking, playing darts and being in nature.
Survivors include his daughter Robin McKnight and her husband, Mark Philbin of Harrisonburg, VA; his son Randy McKnight of Barre; his grandson David Nolan of Middlesex; his sister Lorraine Portalupi of Williamstown and several beloved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Elizabeth Launderville and Marion Safford, and his brother David McKnight.
