Obituary

BARRE – John E. Hallihan, 84, of South Main Street passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

Born on October 14, 1941, in Barre, he was the son of John F. and Gertrude (Bacon) Hallihan. He attended Barre Elementary Schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1959.

John was part-owner of the Skyline Ski Area, a popular local ski area in Barre. Over the course of his professional career, John was affiliated with various fuel companies in the Barre Montpelier area and was the General Manager, before his retirement in 2007, for Trono Fuel Company.

He was a member of the St. Monica Catholic Church, past Chairman for the Washington County Cancer Society; member of the Vermont Republican Party, and he was also a member of various antique clubs, associations, and organizations.

In his spare time, John enjoyed playing tennis, skiing, and mushrooming. He was a flea market and garage sale enthusiast as well as a noted local Barre historian. John was also a highly knowledgeable and respected antique collector and dealer in Vermont and the Eastern United States.

Survivors include his sister Elizabeth (Betty) Tubbs, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Gerald (Jerry) Hallihan and James (Jim) Hallihan, as well as a nephew.

John had many acquaintances and friends from his lifetime spent in Barre, including his good friend Dr. George Luccina, and lifelong friend Lauren Van Deren and lifetime friend William Partlow.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate his life will be held in the spring of 2026 at a time to be determined. There are no calling hours.
