Obituary

Joanne L. Wood- (NORTHFIELD/BARRE), age 79, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, at Barre Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

Joanne was born on September 22, 1946, to Glendon and Virginia Barnett. She spent her early years growing up in a large family in Cabot, attending elementary and secondary school there, later moving to Barre during her senior year and graduating from Spaulding High School.

Joanne dedicated her entire life to nurturing the people around her. As one of the older siblings in a family of ten, she naturally took on a caregiving role with the younger children. Professionally, she poured her heart into assisting others as a nurse’s aide and personal care attendant. Within her own family, she was a constant source of support, providing childcare for her beloved grandchildren and her siblings’ children. When her daughters were starting their own families and careers, Joanne was always there, offering endless love and guidance. Her gift for caregiving deeply influenced the next generation; she taught her daughters how to love, care for, and lift up children, inspiring their own careers in education and children’s mental health.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Gattone (Frank) and Lisa Felch (Lester), and their father, her former husband, Christopher Barbieri; her grandchildren, Ryan, Leah, Gillian, Erika, and Allyson; and great-grandson, Devon. She is also survived by her twin sister and best friend, Joanna (“Twinnie”) and siblings, Thomas, Timothy, Mitchell, Roger (“Tony”), and Pamela; and several nieces and nephews.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Wood; her son, Matthew Barbieri; her parents; and siblings, Glendon (“Butchie”), Glenda (“Tootsie”) and Rosemary.

The family would like to thank Barre Gardens and Bayada Hospice staff for the care and comfort they provided to Joanne during her final days.

A private interment at Mount Hope Cemetery and celebration of life for family and close friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Joanne's legacy by spending time with your loved ones, being present, sharing experiences, and making lasting memories.
