BARRE – L. James “Jim” Daniels, 98, of North Barre Manor passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin surrounded by the caring nurses at Woodridge.
Born December 27, 1920 at Brightlook Hospital in St. Johnsbury, he was the son of Leslie James and Ada Lois (Hoyt) Daniels, Sr. Jim attended elementary school in Williamstown and graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester, NH in 1938.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 29, 1942, serving as a Machinists Mate, Second Class on a sub chaser in the Caribbean area until he was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945. After he returned from the Navy, he attended the University of Vermont until he accepted a position as a Technician with the Vermont Highway Department, retiring in 1982, after 34 years of service.
On January 1, 1948 he married Betty Louise Lawrence in Toledo, OH. Following their marriage, they first made their home in Montpelier before moving to Richardson Road in Barre Town. Betty passed away in November of 2011. Jim moved to the North Barre Manor in 2015.
His memberships included the Barre Congregational Church where he served on various church committees, the Granite Lodge #35 of which he was Past Master, Past High Priest Granite Chapter #26, member Barre Council #22 R & A M, Past Commander of St. Aldemar Commandery #11 K T, Past Master Association of the 6 th Masonic District of Vermont as well as a Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star #62 where he also served as Secretary of Chapter and Council for many years.
Survivors include his son Leslie Arthur Daniels of Barre and his daughter Jane Daniels Joslin of Williamstown; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Betty Daniels and his grandson Corey Daniels.
The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Barre Congregational Church, 35 Church Street, Barre. There will be a reception immediately following the service at the church. Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.
