BARRE - Jesse Lee Eklund, 32, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 21, 2018. Jesse was born on October 19, 1985 in Burlington, VT. He was the beloved son of Judy Eklund and the late John Eklund of Barre Town.
Jesse attended Barre Town Elementary and Middle School and Spaulding High School. He leaves his two brothers; Erik Eklund of Alpine, WY and Mark Eklund of Seattle, WA. He was closest to his Rhode Island family, his aunt and uncle, John and Donna Kane, and cousins, Sean, Scott and Samantha. Throughout his life he enjoyed frequent trips to RI to see his grandparents and family. He leaves many friends but especially his good friend, Mike Welch, who supported him through recent difficult times.
Jesse was a lover of animals sharing his life over the years with three golden retrievers and his wild Siberian husky, Marlie. Many stray cats were brought home throughout his childhood because they “couldn’t be homeless.” His passion was hockey, starting in BYSA hockey from the age of 5 and playing through high school and then as an adult. Trips to Canada to watch hockey and to play were his fondest memories. He always said, “those were the best of times.”
Aside from hockey Jesse loved the outdoors. Like most Vermonters he couldn’t wait for summer and hiking and camping but especially spending time near the ocean. He lived in the Florida Keys as a child and visited Florida whenever the chance came up. He wanted to be closer to the ocean and had plans to move to either Rhode Island or Florida in the next year.
To honor his wishes a private service will be held in Rhode Island this summer.
