BARRE CITY – Janice Helen Bernasconi, 78, a longtime Barre resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 8, 2018. Her loving family was with her at her bedside.
Born on June 26, 1940 in Barre City, she was the daughter of Douglas and Margaret (Shea) Smith. She attended local elementary schools and was a member of the Spaulding High School Class of 1959. Following that she attended the Thompson School for Practical Nurses in Brattleboro where she graduated as an LPN in 1960.
On October 15, 1960 she married Erman Bernasconi, Jr., in Barre. They made their home in the Barre area where they raised three wonderful children throughout their forty nine years of marriage.
Janice’s nursing career took her to many different health and nursing facilities, including Barre City Hospital, Whitehouse Nursing Home (Zanleoni Nursing Home), Rowan Court Nursing Home and Berlin Convalescent Center where she eventually retired from.
One of her greatest joys was time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took great pride in caring for family and friends.
Janice enjoyed spending time at the Aldrich Public Library and was passionate about reading books.
She took great joy and pride in knitting afghans for family members. Especially knitting baby blankets for each new baby in the family.
Survivors include her daughter Deborah Gregoire and her husband, Marc, of Barre; her son James Bernasconi of Barre; her sisters Kathleen Boudreau and her husband, David of West Rutland; Mary-Ann Huang and her husband, Henry of Barre; her brother Lawrence Smith of Burlington, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves her grandchildren Megan Spaulding and her husband, Daniel of Barre; Jason Gregoire and his wife, Felicia of Columbia, TN; and Ryan Gregoire and his wife, Crystal of Barre; and great-grandchildren Leah and Carter Spaulding of Barre; Kaiden Spaulding of Randolph; and Riley Gregoire of Columbia, TN.
She was predeceased by her daughter Judith Bernasconi on April 11, 1975.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Monica Catholic Church on Summer Street in Barre. Interment will follow in the Hope Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
