James V. Goodall

BARRE – James Victor Goodall, 89, of Mount Vernon Place, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at his home. His loving family was with him at his bedside.

Born on February 17, 1930 in East Montpelier, he was the son of J. Harold and Olive (Morse) Goodall. He attended elementary school in East Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1948.

Following his schooling, James enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Section Leader in a Headquarters Detachment before being honorably discharged.

On May 24, 1952, James married the love of his life, Janetlee Garfield in the Old Brick Church in East Montpelier. The two made their home in East Montpelier, where they raised their three wonderful children. Later in life, James and Janetlee moved to Barre, where they stayed for the rest of his days.

Throughout his younger years, James worked as a farmer. He eventually became employed by the Federal Soil Conservation Service, where he worked for 34 years until his retirement. He also spent many years as an avid Christmas tree farmer.

James was a dedicated member of the Old Brick Church in East Montpelier for many years, as well as being a life-long member of the Aurora Masonic Lodge No. 22 in Montpelier.

Some of his interests included farming, growing blackberries and making blackberry wine, gardening, growing Christmas trees, basket weaving, knitting hats and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Janetlee Goodall of Barre; his son Richard Goodall and his wife, Robin, of Randolph; his daughter Robin Lee Goodall of Barre; three grandchildren Kelsey Hayden and her husband, Chad, of Bolton, James Goodall and his wife, Julie, of South Burlington, and Jenna Lee Goodall of Maine; as well as two great-grandchildren Eleanor Goodall and Addison Quinton. He also leaves his brother David Goodall and his wife. Elaine, of East Montpelier; two sisters Joyce Fowler and her husband, Stanley, of Plainfield and Rachel Hood and her husband, Wallace, of Cabot; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son Randall Goodall.

A service to honor and celebrate James’s life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Later interment will take place in the Plain-Mont Cemetery at the convenience of the family in the spring. There are no calling hours.
