Barre

BARRE - Jacqueline Clarke Walker, 92, a former longtime resident of Glastonbury, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 22, 2018 with her loving family by her side.

Born on May 7, 1926 in Summit NJ., she was the daughter of Allen Hillyer and Evelyn (Cook) Clarke.   Jacque attended the Kent Place School in Summit, and then graduated from the Buffalo School of Nursing in 1951. Later in life she earned her master’s degree from the University of Connecticut and served as the Ombudsman for the elderly for the state of Connecticut for many years.

Jacque devoted her life to fighting against war and racism, and to helping people. She volunteered many places, including The Soup and Sandwich Kitchen at the church she loved: The First Universalist Church of Barre. Jacque also volunteered at the Food Bank, the Barre Opera House, the State House, and Barre City Elementary School's library while her grandchildren attended there.

She also fought passionately for social and political causes. Jacque supported candidates that helped the environment and opposed war and killing. She worked tirelessly to end The Vietnam War, even traveling to Washington D.C to protest. When she was President of The Democratic Women's Club, she started a “coffee house” in Hartford, CT to raise money for the antiwar candidate, Eugene McCarthy.

SHE LOVED BOOKS. Jacque worked at the Aldrich Public Library into her eighties, and started an outreach program, delivering books to homebound people.

Survivors include her sons Michael and his wife, Susan of Salem, NH and John of Charlottesville, VA; and her daughter Naomi of Barre, VT. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A celebration of Jacque's life will be held in the spring, with the date to be announced prior to the service.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Lincoln House of Barre for providing Jacque with a warm and caring place to live out the last years of her life.
