Herbert W. Jorgensen

BARRE – Herbert W. Jorgensen, 90, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019 at Lincoln House.

Born on September 4, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of William and Anna (Sjoholm) Jorgensen. In the mid-40’s the family moved to the Green Mountains and located in Barre. Herbert attended local elementary schools and after a two-year hitch in the Army, he graduated from Spaulding High School in 1949.

After graduation, he and his father, Bill Jorgensen, owned and operated Barre Sign Company, Inc. The latter retiring a few years later.

On October 24, 1952 he married June M. Dickey. This union was blessed with two children, Lesley A. and Susan C. Jorgensen. Lesley passed away in 2009. His wife of 66 years, June Jorgensen passed away in 2017.

His memberships included the Lions Club, Mutuo, Inc., Barre Lodge of Elks #1535, American Legion Post #10, and the following masonic bodies: Granite Lodge, Knighted of Birmingham, Square & Compass, Grand Chapter, Barre Council, St. Aldemar Commandery, in the Scottish Rite he was a member of Gamaliel Washburn Lodge of Perfection, Mount Calvary of Council Rose Croix-Valley of Montpelier, Vermont Consistory-Valley of Burlington and Mt. Sinai Temple No. 3 A.A.O.N.M.S. of Montpelier. He was also a member of Charity Chapter No. 33, O.E.S. of Williamstown and the Royal Order of Jesters, Montpelier, VT. He served as Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of the State of Vermont in 1975. Director of Mt. Sinai Temple Shrine second action, and past president and member of Mt. Sinai Temple Arab Patrol.   He was also director and past president of Palm River Park in Naples, FL and served as a member of the Board of the Barre City Cemetery and Parks Commission, retiring after 41 years of service.

Herbert also had an appreciation of the outdoors and was a member of the Corinth Hunting Club and enjoyed spending time at the family “camp” on Lake Elmore as well as elk hunting in Montana.

Surviving is his daughter Susan Jorgensen of Barre Town. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife June Jorgensen, his daughter Lesley Jorgensen, and his brother Rudy Jorgensen.

The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Following the service, inurnment will take place in Hope Cemetery in Barre. There are no calling hours.
