BARRE CITY – Harvey J. Stabene, Jr., 75 of Sunrise Avenue passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the Central Vermont Medical Center.
Born on September 7, 1950, in Morgantown, West Virginia, he was the son of Harvey and Ruth (Cooley) Stabene, Sr. He attended Elementary School in Morgantown and graduated from Morgantown High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 10th Special Forces Group as a Green Beret from 1968-1971.
In 1972, he married Edith Petersen in Greenville, NH. Following their marriage, they made their home in New Hampshire for several years. In 1979, they moved to Vermont when Harvey started employment at Cabot Hosiery (Darn Tough), where he worked for 38 years, retiring in 2016.
Harvey was a member of the American Legion Post #10 of Barre, and in his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, outdoor sports, smoking meats on the BBQ, gardening, and he also enjoyed quiet time in the pool.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Stabene, his daughter Melissa Mason (Michelle), and his son Harvey Stabene III (Laura), his grandchildren Taylor and Rourke Delancey, and his brother-in-law Robert Petersen as well as nephews and their families in Massachusetts and cousins and their families in West Virginia.
Per his wishes, there will be no services.

His family would like to give a special thank you to the ALS Clinic at the White River Jct., VA Hospital, especially his special friend and handyman Todd, and his caregivers Virginia, Don, and Chanelle.
