MIDDLESEX – Frederick Marshall Newhall, 88, of Stewart Road passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center. His loving family was at his bedside.

Born August 4, 1928 in Middlesex, he was the son of Alvah and Laura Newhall.

Frederick attended Middlesex Elementary School and graduated from Montpelier High School with the class of 1949. After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Korean War for four years before being honorably discharged. He then served sixteen more years in the Army and Navy Reserve.

On September 28, 1957 he married Merriam in Middlesex.   After their marriage they made their home on Stewart Road in Berlin.

Frederick was employed by the State of Vermont Department of Economic Development for 37 years.   He served on the Berlin Elementary School Board for 9 years, was a Berlin Youth Baseball Coach for 7 years, and was a member of the Berlin Development Review Board for several years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting stamps and working in his flower gardens.

Survivors include his loving wife of almost 60 years, Merriam; his children Cindy Babcock and her husband, Mark of Ft. Myers, FL; Alvah Newhall of Berlin; and Fred Newhall and his companion, Nicole Pettersen and her two sons of Randolph; his grandchildren Amy Haskins and her husband, Greg of Waterbury and Mark Babcock, Jr., of Virginia; and his great-grandson Cameron Kinsell of Waterbury as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Herpst.

The graveside service with full military rites to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Vermont Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center. Family and friends may call on Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.

The family would like to give special thanks to the C wing staff at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation for their loving care of Frederick.
