BARRE – Frederick Anthony Fischer, 76, of North Main Street, died suddenly on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
Born July 4, 1940 in Jamaica, NY, he was the son of George H. and Mae (Powers) Fischer.
Frederick attended public schools in New York City, NY. Following his schooling he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served the first of his two enlistments in Germany. In February of 1962 he reenlisted and served with the 82 nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. until he was honorably discharged in 1965. While serving in the Army, Frederick lived in Brooklyn, NY. After his Army service, he settled in Arlington, VT and worked as a chef in a restaurant owned by his brother George before becoming employed at the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, VT. He next spent 17 years employed as a Dock Worker and member of the Teamsters Union at the A&P Tea Company Warehouse in Port Newark, NJ before moving back to Vermont with his 2 children, and worked for the Coca-Cola Warehouse, Dunkin’ Donuts, and eventually retired from Coles Express Trucking in St. Johnsbury.
He was a member of St. Monica’s Parish, Barre American Legion Post #10, and was a 4 th degree Knight of Columbus. In his spare time, he enjoyed shopping, eating out, visiting with his children and grandchildren and he also collected marbles and vintage glassware and always got extra satisfaction when he found that long-sought after “great deal” at one of the several thrift stores that he was known to visit regularly.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Evelyn Bell, whom he met when they both lived in the Washington Apartments and spent eleven wonderful years at each other’s sides; his son, David Fischer of Barre; his daughter, Maureen Allen and her husband, Lonnie, of Morrisville; his grandchildren Chloe McNeil of Barre, and Benjamin and Jeremy Fischer both of Barre; his sister Julie Mignosi and her husband, Salvatore of Brooklyn, NY as well as numerous nieces, and nephews. Most of whom called Fred their favorite uncle.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
A graveside service with full military honors to celebrate his life will be held at the Vermont Veteran’s Memorial Center in Randolph Center in the spring. There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2451 Crystal Drive, Suite 900, Arlington, VA 22202.
