BARRE – Frank A. Wilbur, 89, formerly of Lincoln House where he was a resident since January 2005, died Saturday, January 10, 2015 in Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
He was born on March 29, 1925, in Grafton, Vermont, the first child of Harry and Beatrice (Small) Wilbur. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1948 with an AB degree in American Literature, obtained further education from the School of Education at Boston University, and received his AM degree in English from the University of Vermont in 1969.
He retired in 1994 after forty-six years of teaching, thirty of those at Spaulding High School in Barre. His other teaching experiences included six years at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, and nine years at Danville High School, Danville, Vermont.
During his professional career, he was active in the Barre Education Association. Following his retirement, he became active in the Washington County Retired Teachers Association and the Vermont Retired Teachers Association. Other memberships included several historical societies and AARP.
His other interests were his children and grandchildren, service in the Barre Evangelical Free Church, the activity program at Lincoln House, the Civil War, and Red Sox baseball.
Survivors include three children: his sons, Timothy Wilbur of Orange, Daniel Wilbur of Barre, and his daughter, Rebecca Wilbur of East Corinth; his two grandsons, three nephews, and one niece. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, a sister, and a half-brother.
Frank was always grateful to the staff and administration at Lincoln House for the thoughtful, kind, good-natured care they provided him throughout the years he was privileged to live there.
At his request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. There will be a memorial service at the Barre Evangelical Free Church at a later date. Burial will be in the family lot in the Houghtonville Cemetery in Grafton, Vermont.
The Hooker & Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre, is in charge of arrangements.
