Barre Town – Floy Albra (Newton) Gibbs Virge, 85, of Farwell Street, surrounded by her loving family and friends, left this world on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, from her home, to be with her beloved husband, Bernarr Sr., in heaven.
Born September 7, 1929, in Waitsfield, she was the daughter of Floyd and Mildred (Norway) Newton. She graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre in 1950.
Floy worked at Sprague Electric, Whelan Drugs, J.J. Newberrys, the Wayside, the Galley and various other food establishments. After retirement she continued to volunteer at the Galley for several years.
In her free time she enjoyed going to BINGO, singing karaoke with Sherry’s Jubilee on Friday nights and spending time with family and friends.
“Mom” will be sadly missed by her children, Sharon Jacobs of Barre, Bernarr Gibbs Jr. and his wife Donna of Berlin, Crystal Breer of Orange, Jeff Virge and his wife Kathy also of Barre and Cecile Martin and her husband “Tiny”, who lived with Floy. She also leaves a stepson, Parris M. (Skip) Gibbs and his wife Phylis of Hamden, Conn., and a stepdaughter, Carol Jeanne Stange, of Maine.
Her grandchildren, Tracy and B.J. Sweet, Renita and Chris Marshall, Jeremy and Cheryl Jacobs, Desta and David Boswell, Seth Breer, Danelle Jenkins, Jeffrey Virge II and Kevin Virge will miss her hugs and yearly birthday cards. She is also survived by fifteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and one brother, Malcolm Newton. She will be missed by many extended family members who called her “Mom” or “Gram.”
Floy was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Clinton and Art Newton, sister Betsy Montano, her son Edward “Gibber” Gibbs, her grandson, Aaron Breer and her former husbands, Bernarr Gibbs Sr., George Bouley and James Virge.
Floy had been a 50 year member of the Ruth Chapter #33 Order Eastern Star, as well as a member of the Auxiliaries of Mackenzie-Webster Post 790 VFW, and the Barre, Post 10 the American Legion, and the Loyal Women of the Moose in Barre.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at 6:30 PM at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Calling hours will be from 5 PM until the service begins. A graveside service will take place in June.

Floy’s family would like to thank the Plainfield Health Center medical staff, University of VT Health Network, Central VT Medical Center ICU staff and 2 North nurses, Mary, Heather, William and Chrissy for the care they gave her during her short stay in the hospital. They would also like to extend a thank you to all who offered care, support, cards, food and flowers during her short illness.
