ORANGE– Florinda T. Letourneau, 98, a longtime resident of George Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. Her loving family were at her bedside.
Born on February 25, 1920 in Santander, Spain, she was the daughter of Florindo and Romalda (Maza) Teja. The family emigrated to the United States when Florinda was a child and came to live in East Barre. She attended elementary school there and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1937.
On December 31, 1940, she married the love of her life, Eugene R. Letourneau in Williamstown. They first made their home in Williamstown, before moving to East Barre where they raised their five children. In 1973 they moved to Orange.
Florinda was well known to everyone in the East Barre community, where she worked as the Postmaster for 21 years. She was also a member of the East Barre Congregational Church.
Throughout her life she had many hobbies and interests. The most important of those included spending time with her family, reading, following her favorite TV shows, sewing and knitting.
Survivors include her three sons Eugene J. and Thelma Letourneau of Hendersonville, NC; Ray and Judy Letourneau of Orange; Larry Letourneau and Anita Woodward of Montgomery Center; and her daughter and her spouse Nancy and Gary Shute of East Barre as well as eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Eugene in 1991 and her son Herbert F. Letourneau in 1943.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Florinda’s life will be held in the Brookhaven Cemetery in the Spring. There are no calling hours.
