Evelyn M. Sargent

September 1, 1933 — March 10, 2017

Barre Town

BARRE TOWN - Evelyn Margaret “Peg” Sargent, 83, of Barre Town passed away quietly, surrounded by family, on Friday, March 10 at the Menig Nursing Home in Randolph Center. She was born on September 1, 1933, to C. Walton and Alzada “Zip” (Allen) Osgood and grew up in Bradford. She graduated in 1951 from Bradford Academy and was married to her high school sweet-heart, Harold Ernest Sargent, on May 17, 1953 at the Grace Methodist Church in Bradford.

Before starting a family, she worked as a bank teller at Bradford National Bank and then for the State Auditor's office. Later, she worked as a teller for the Sterling Trust Bank and with retirement accounts for the Vermont Federal Bank in Burlington. Throughout her life, she considered her primary and most important job as homemaker, which she did excellently.

She is survived by her loving husband, H. Ernest Sargent, and two brothers, Dean (wife Joan) Osgood, of Piermont, NH and Karl (wife Sally) Osgood, of Bradford. She was a devoted mother to her seven children, who were primarily raised in Underhill: Brian (wife Tanya) Sargent of Washington, VT; Darlene Sargent (died in infancy); Maureen (husband Chuck) Heifetz of Orange, CT; Tim (wife Bobbie) Sargent of East Barre; Teresa (husband Jim) Penniman of Northfield, MA; Clark (wife Helen) Sargent of Underhill; and Blythe Sargent of Telluride, CO.

She took delight in her sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren: Benjamin (wife Kate) Sargent of Grandby, CT (parents of Amelia Evelyn); Ira Sargent and Justin Sargent both of Washington; Allegra Sargent of Houston, TX; Abigail Sargent of Princeton, NJ; Emily Sargent and Jonathan Sargent both of East Barre; Bradley Penniman of Keene, NH; Joseph Penniman of Poughkeepsie, NY; Andrew Penniman of Seattle, WA; Elizabeth Sargent of Pooler, GA (mother of Jamison and Benson); Molly Sargent and Josh Sargent both of Burlington; Allison Lynch of Burlington; Katie Lynch of Underhill; and Stella Coe of Telluride, CO.

In addition to her children, her passions were vegetable gardening, canning, summer picnics, ballroom dancing, and community service. She was an avid reader. Everywhere she lived she served her church by book-keeping, singing in the choir, and in preparing for innumerable church suppers.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Menig Nursing home for their exceptional and loving care for Peg during her final struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She loved the staff and it was clear that she was loved in return.

A Memorial Service and celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 15th, at her home church, the East Barre Congregational Church. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the East Barre Congregational Church, P.O. Box 246, East Barre, VT 05649, or the Menig Nursing Home Activities Fund, 215 Tom Wicker Lane, Randolph Center, VT 05061.
