BARRE – Eugene Oliver Magoon, 77, of Farwell Street, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 27, 2017, at his home. His loving family was with him at his bedside.

Born on July 14, 1939 in Norfolk, VA, he was the son of Edgar and Flindy (Norton) Magoon Sr. He attended Berlin Elementary School and Montpelier High School in the class of 1957 where he excelled as a member of the football team. Following his education, he enlisted in the United States Army for several years. After his discharge, he went on to enlist in the United States Navy and had proudly and honorably served in Vietnam.

In 1962, he married Gloria Santamore in New Jersey. Following their marriage, they made their home in the Barre area for the remainder of Eugene’s life. They were divorced in 1994.

Eugene spent his entire civilian working career in the Granite Industry in Barre as a polisher working for the former Bianchi Granite Company and for the Northeast Granite Company.

He was a proud member of the Canadian Club, VFW Post #790 and the American Legion Post #10, all of Barre.

Throughout his life he had many hobbies and interests, but those that he held most dear included going fishing, boating, taking rides around Berlin pond, making visits to the Berlin family farm and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his children, Patty (Magoon) Adams, Flinda (Magoon) Horton, Vickie Magoon, Steven Magoon, Eugene Magoon, Kelly Fordham, all of Vermont and Christine (Magoon) Foreman of Louisiana and Tanya Magoon of Pennsylvania; nineteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and his former wife, Eugene was predeceased by three sons, Douglas Magoon, Timothy Magoon and Christopher Magoon; a daughter, Barbara Magoon and his brother, Edgar Magoon Jr.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate his life will take place in the Berlin Corner Cemetery in the spring. Family and friends may call at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre on Thursday, February 2, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Chapter, 121 Connor Way, Williston, VT 05495.
